  Father Ernest Hartnett

Cousin Ernie, the son of Gabrielle Alberque Hartnett and Patrick Edward Hartnett, was born Oct. 1, 1904 in New York City.   He was orphaned as an infant.  His living arrangements are not clear for the first few years of his life but sometime after 1915 he came to live with the Alberques. There he was raised by his uncle, E.G. Alberque, Sr., and Antoinette with all the other children as if he were their own son.  Ernie entered the Jesuits and was ordained a priest on June 21, 1936. He volunteered to work in a leper colony in 1939 in the Philippines and was later captured and held by the Japanese in a prison camp there.

The following letter from the Jesuits gives details of this extraordinary man's life.
