What We Know NowWe now have more data about the Alberque family in France that links it conclusively with our American branch. It has been discovered that Georges Joseph and Gabriel Henri were brothers. Their father's name was Antoine, who was born in 1768 to "Marie Magdelaine" and father unknown! And, it turns out that Georges and Gabriel had an older brother, Louis, and a younger sister, Therese. They all lived in the village of Bonneval, in the department of Eure-et-Loir, near Chartres. (Perhaps Antoine did not want his son to suffer the same fate that he had, i.e., "unknown father" on the birth certificate, so he married Thereze Colas four months before the birth of their first son.) And we have even newer data from Autosomal DNA testing for the children of E.G. and Antoinette. The first set of Autosomal DNA results is for Mary, youngest daughter of EG and Antoinette. This test compares inherited chromosomes with those of 'native' populations. And now it is OFFICIAL: the Alberques have a 15%-35% match with the IBERIAN PENINSULA (Spain and Portugal) with additional matches in France, Morocco, Algeria, and Italy! Finally, we know where Antoine came from...and the old family legend of our being 'a little bit Portuguese' is true. It had to be. There was way too much evidence based on the derivation of the name Alberque from the Spanish, Portuguese and even Arabic languages to be just coincidence. We also have a a 30%-70% match with Europe West, essentially Germany, France and surrounding countries. This part is no surprise since we know that Antoinette was German and a little French... And there is a small trace in Ireland, the UK, Scandinavia and Italy. These could ancestors that continued to migrate north to the upper reaches of Europe or east to Italy. Note that the family tree for Maurice Alberque's family (Ernest Lucien), our cousin in France who made many of the discoveries, begins with the third child of Henri Augustin in the Gabriel Henri chain. Also one of Ernest Lucien's son's wives recalls a uncle talking about a first cousin who went to America and was involved in the silk business. This helps to confirm the linkage to E.G., although, strictly speaking, they were first cousins, twice removed. Henri Augustin was Jacques Ernest's first cousin. Their children (Ernest Lucien and E.G., respectively) were second cousins. Ernest Lucien's son, was therefore E.G.'s second cousin once removed (same great grandparents but different generations). That makes our (E.G.'s grandchildren's) relationship to Maurice: fourth cousin, (nothing removed) if we've counted right! (Same great great great grandparents.)
